The Surface takes place in Manchester, Northwest England. The exact time period is unspecified, but it is within the 21st century, however, still ahead of the time we're living in now. North Brook High is an elite fictional high school (further education 16 - 18), the most prestigious in the world, located in Manchester city within Northwest England. Because the children who attend North Brook High are almost always descendants of extremely powerful parents, there is a lot of injustice that is able to fly under the radar. If you succeed at North Brook High, you can get into any University in the world, which is why courses are extremely competitive and the students are even more so. The North Brook High Mascot is the Timber Wolf, and their school colors are royal blue, black, gray, and white. It is a school of roughly 500 students. Pine Brook, a short distance from North Brook High, is a wealthy neighborhood and is where most of the main characters' homes are. It is an area that, surprisingly, has a lot of trees & greenery. Stoneside Grove is the Neighborhood that Nathan lives in. His sister goes to Sunshine Primary School, which is about 3 miles from there. Rosy's is the North Brook Survivors' favorite coffee shop and becomes a frequent meeting place for their group. This coffee shop is a subtle tribute to Rosyclozy. ︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵

𝒁𝒐𝒆𝒚 𝑴𝒐𝒐𝒓𝒆: Zoey is the main female protagonist. She is a bit on the larger size and is often the subject of severe bullying because of this. This often leaves her feeling bitter and distrustful, which is something that she has to work through as she learns to love herself and to stand up for what she believes in. Zoey is an introvert in every manner, except for when she's on stage. On stage is the one place where she feels that she can truly be bold and shine the way she wants to. She is a talented actress and is extremely passionate about theatre. Zoey loves travelling to see Broadway musicals, which is something she can easily afford with her family wealth. She aims to be a journalist so she can bring truth and justice to the world.

𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑱𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔:

Nathan is the main male protagonist. He is very small and thin, something that a lot of other guys make fun of him for. Ever the optimist, he insists on looking at the best in everyone, sometimes being too trusting. He doesn't come from much, raised by his awful adoptive mother, he takes care of his younger sister and protects her at all costs. He got into North Brook High with funds provided by someone (who it is is currently a secret), but it came at a cost. Nathan wants to be a doctor because, for all the times he was physically abused and no one was there for him, he wants to be there for others at their worst and help them heal. Attending North Brook High nearly guarantees him that opportunity. He despises sports and is a bit uncoordinated. However, Nathan is very talented at photography, strategy games, and creative writing, and he loves stargazing. He is not proud of the person he was in the past, but he has greatly become a better person since then and genuinely cares for those around him.

[Zoey is bitter and has a pessimistic outlook on life that she has to learn to work through. Nathan is the mirror opposite, but this leads to his flaw of being a little bit too trusting and somewhat naive in certain cases. The two of them being together helps them find the balance between being hopeful and not giving up on the world, but still being realistic and knowing when not to trust]

𝑹𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒔:

Ruthie is Zoey's best friend and nearly her complete opposite. Extroverted, bubbly, and sometimes loud, she loves people and new experiences. She isn't super beautiful, but isn't ugly either. Her appearance is what most would call average, and she's insecure about this, though you wouldn't know by talking to her. When she was younger, she was so insecure that she would constantly dye her hair, and because of that, now it is irreversibly damaged, so she wears it in a ponytail to make it more manageable. Ever the sweetheart, when she saw the North Brook icons giving Zoey a hard time in secondary school, she befriended her and they've been inseparable ever since. Ruthie loves to bake and can cook just about anything. She loves making pastries for the household staff, especially when they're going through a struggle. Ruthie's main character flaw is her desperation to fit in, and sometimes she goes to unhealthy lengths to try to achieve this. She and Zoey make each other better because Zoey inspires her to not be afraid to stand out, in spite of the haters, and Ruthie helps Zoey get out of her shell and try new experiences.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑲𝒚𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒎𝒔: Kye is a rebellious teen, sometimes to a fault, who is quick to stick up for Zoey when she's being physically abused by the North Brook Icon boys. Growing up with overly strict parents who barely give him any freedom, he does everything he can to defy them out of spite. He's a quick thinker and an even better fighter, but he has a good heart, even if it's a little rough around the edges. Kye is a skilled painter & pianist and does both of these to calm down when his mind is racing or to express repressed emotions. He becomes a part of the North Brook Icons later on in the first volume, and while not yet confirmed, might be a possible love interest for Ruthie.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏𝒔𝒐𝒏: Harmony is introduced at the beginning of volume 2. She is a natural beauty, rivaling that of Nicole, but has a very shy personality, except when around friends. She grew up with Ruthie & Zoey at the beginning of secondary school, but quickly moved to Spain due to her dad's business. She later comes back as a transfer student at North Brook High and reconciles with Ruthie and Zoey. Harmony has suffered on and off with an eating disorder and quickly becomes a target for Nicole out of jealousy towards her. She is reluctant to get help for her mental and physical health, and her friends consistently try to push her in the right direction to get assistance. Harmony is kind and generous, and she loves to design clothing and jewelry. She'd give you the shirt off her back if you needed it.

𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝑨𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒔:

Nicole is the main female antagonist, and she is a force to be reckoned with. Intelligent, talented, and charismatic, she effortlessly gains the attention of those around her and is a little too proud of it. To the world, she seems perfect and virtually untouchable, but to anyone who doesn't fit her viewpoint of how a person should look and act, she is nothing short of vicious. Growing up with her unloving, toxic parents, both of whom are extremely focused on public image, she puts others down in an effort to feel better about herself and the trials she has to deal with at home.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑺𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂 𝑳𝒊𝒆𝒍:

Sierra Liel is Nicole's second in command. With a vast social following and a large social influence, she uses gossip to her advantage on whoever she deems fit. She is cunning and perceptive, easily navigating through social situations and gaining the intel she needs to bring someone down. Two-faced and gossipy, but loyal to her friends and loved ones, she has trouble acknowledging who she is and even who she wants to be. Both of her parents being extremely busy with work and constantly travelling, she rarely sees them and usually has only the house staff for company. Because of this, she craves attention and has a deep-rooted desire to be known and loved.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑳𝒐𝒍𝒂 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏: Lola is more of a reluctant bully. She grew up being taught the importance of social standing and the way she's viewed by others. Her mother and father pressured her into the friendship with the North Brook icons, because all their parents are friends. Constantly being under pressure by her mom and dad to excel socially and having to deal with them always pointing fingers at her mistakes, it's easier for Lola to maintain her friendship with the North Brook Icons and pretend to be something she's not in order to fit in. Lola is torn because she does care about and value her friends, but she doesn't like the way they treat other people, and to maintain her social standing and the approval of her parents, she often feels like she's forced to act the same way as them.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒚 𝑹𝒐𝒔𝒔: Andy is the main male antagonist and can be ruthless when provoked... or if he's just having a bad day. Short-tempered, a daredevil, and quick to judge, he loves the adrenaline rush of bringing someone else down. In reality, he's extremely insecure and truly despises himself. Ever the thrill seeker, his hobbies revolve around anything high energy and dangerous because it makes him feel confident and like he's on top of the world. That, and comparing himself to people he thinks are less than him, are unhealthy coping mechanisms he's developed to deal with his low self-esteem, because he's been taught growing up by his single father that his emotions make him weak.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑱𝒂𝒄𝒐𝒃/𝑱𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏:

Jacob Brown, who goes by Jake instead of Jacob, is the half-brother of Lola and is a quiet bookworm. He's extremely intelligent but doesn't have a lot of emotional depth, so he has trouble relating to others and making friends. His parents set him up to become friends with the North Brook Icons, and that gives him a sense of self and belonging. Easily influenced, he is quick to go along with his friends and is not just ignorant of others' feelings and the consequences of his actions, but also actively refuses to acknowledge that what he's doing is wrong.

✧˖°── .✦────☼༺☆༻☾────✦.── °˖✧

𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕/𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒘 𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔𝒍𝒆𝒚 Matthew Kingsley, who just goes by Matt, is the most athletic out of the three boys. He is an avid surfer and is on the school swim team. He is also skilled at archery and hunting. For most of his childhood, he was bullied a lot, and while the reasons for it are unspecified, it hurt him deeply and put him in a constant state of fear. Rather than dealing with his emotions, he joined the North Brook icons and willingly became a bully, so that he could avoid being bullied himself.
